Why this number matters

Grip strength correlates with total-body muscle strength, and it is measured the same way everywhere with a device that costs less than a pair of shoes. That combination is why it turns up in so much research: it is one of the very few strength measurements with genuinely comparable data across countries and decades.

It is also a component of the standard sarcopenia definition. The European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People uses grip strength below 27 kg for men and 16 kg for women as the cutoff that triggers further assessment. Those thresholds sit near the 5th percentile for a man in his 60s and near the 25th percentile for a woman in her 70s ... which is exactly why a raw threshold and an age-adjusted percentile tell you different things.

Peak grip lands in the early 30s for both sexes and holds remarkably flat through the 40s before the decline becomes steady. If your number is falling faster than the table's slope for your age, that gap is the finding.

How to measure it properly

Use a hand dynamometer. Sit with your elbow at 90 degrees and tucked at your side, wrist neutral, and squeeze as hard as you can for about 3 seconds. Take three readings per hand with a short rest between, and use your single best reading.

Standing versus seated, elbow angle, and dynamometer model all shift the result by a few kilograms, so keep your protocol identical between tests. The reference values below use the dominant hand.

How to read your result

Read the percentile for your own age band rather than against a single adult cutoff. A 34 kg reading is around the 75th percentile for a woman in her 30s and above the 95th for a woman in her 80s.

Because the reference population is worldwide and includes a wide range of body sizes, very tall or very heavy people tend to read a little high on absolute grip. If you want to account for that, divide your reading by your bodyweight in kg and compare that ratio over time instead.
